Train suicide in Japan
Train suicide is getting worse and worse in Japan;
TOKYO, Jan. 24 (AP) – (Kyodo)—Operations of 35,300 trains were delayed over 30 minutes or canceled in Japan in fiscal 2008 due to “suicide divers,” the worst since fiscal 2002 when the data became available, a transport ministry survey showed Sunday.
Many reasons can be attributed to the higher numbers of suicide, more stress and more problems with the Japanese economy. The transport ministry’s survey is of 2008 when the economic downturn was at it’s worst the 2009 numbers should be lower. Big cities like tokyo are still the most popular place for “divers” to make the leap;
Of the 35,300, 21,100, or 60 percent, were trains operated in the metropolitan area in Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
Train companies have tried many different things to lessen the numbers of suicides via train, but without avail.
