Lucky Star shrine has made 1 Billion Yen so far

Washimiya, the town with the Lucky Star shrine has had a 1 billion yen boost in its economy, thanks to lucky star. Hardcore fans of lucky star are making the “ Holy pilgrimage” to the sacred land, the lucky star temple. With hardcore fans comes hardcore purchases the towns Lucky star related goods being the main selling items;

While the full economic impact of Lucky Star cannot be determined for certain, sales of related goods alone have been pegged at 70 million yen (US$780,000).

In 2007 the Washimiya shrine had 90,000 visits during the 3 day new years holidays, 2009 the shrine had 450,000 visits within 3 days. So why is Washimiya town so popular amongst fans?

Lucky Star fans began making “holy pilgrimages” to the town’s main shrine after the anime featured Kagami and Tsukasa Hiiragi — twin sister characters who supposedly work at the shrine as miko (shrine maidens).
